Which weather radar is the most accurate? ›

The WSR-88D is one of the most powerful and advanced Weather Surveillance Doppler Radar in the world. Since first being built and tested in 1988, it has been installed and used operationally at over 160 locations across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Velocity data is derived from the phase, or doppler shift of the returned energy. The radar's computers will calculate the shift and determine whether the precipitation is moving toward or away from the radar, and how fast, then apply a corresponding color to those directions and speeds.

Airborne Weather Radar provides the pilot with a local (ahead only) weather picture in the co*ckpit and allows him to identify and avoid specific, undesirable weather formations. A maximum range of 180 NM is common although the commonly used range (as selected by pilots) would normally be in the 30 to 80 NM range.

Warm colors (red) / positive values indicate wind moving away from the radar (along a radial). Cool colors (green) / negative values indicate wind moving toward the radar. The Weather Channel and 1Weather are also solid options, while Clime NOAA Weather Radar Live and Radarscope are a great way to access more detailed satellite views of the sky. Your stock weather app might be ok for the time being, but it's always worth checking out alternatives on offer.

Back when we learned to fly, we were taught the one-in-60 rule. If you were 60nm from a VOR and 1-degree off track you were 1nm off track. For radar there is a more useful form of the rule. If you want to know how many feet 1-degree is at any range just add two zeros to the range.

On a weather radar map, a tornado is usually indicated by a smaller area of red surrounded by a larger area of green. However, modern radar systems can also indicate debris balls, a sign of a tornado on the ground.

The system is primarily used to detect hazardous wind shear conditions, precipitation, and winds over and near major U.S. airports with frequent exposure to thunderstorms.

Some weather radars are fitted with a turbulence display mode. This function (the TURB function) is based on the Doppler effect and is sensitive to precipitation movement.

In general, military radars are designed to detect objects over long distances, and can have ranges that extend into space. For example, some military radars are capable of detecting objects at altitudes of several thousand kilometers, and can track objects in orbit around the Earth.

It has to do with the type and intensity of the precipitation. The colors are typically a spectrum. The greens indicate light or moderate rainfall. Yellow, orange, and red indicate moderate to heavy rainfall and can also indicate hail.

dBZ. Nondimensional "unit" of radar reflectivity which represents a logarithmic power ratio (in decibels, or dB) with respect to radar reflectivity factor, Z. The value of Z is a function of the amount of radar beam energy that is backscattered by a target and detected as a signal (or echo).

If the radar cannot determine (called Range Folding) inbound or outbound then it paints the wind in purple. For the meteorologist, velocity is important for determining areas of strong wind from downbursts or detecting the speed of cold fronts.

Global models with worldwide weather forecasts

These models are all generally fairly accurate in predicting large scale patterns/features, but all will become less accurate through time. The ECMWF is generally considered to be the most accurate global model, with the US's GFS slightly behind.

The National Weather Service's 148 WSR-88D Doppler radars can detect most precipitation within approximately 90 mi of the radar, and intense rain or snow within approximately 155 mi. However, light rain, light snow, or drizzle from shallow cloud weather systems are not necessarily detected.
